Accounts

The chart of accounts, and how the sidebar is organised.

Accounts form a tree. A parent account shows the total of everything beneath it, so you can group Expenses:Car:Fuel and Expenses:Car:Insurance under one Car heading and still see them separately.

Account types

AssetWhat you own — bank accounts, cash, investments, property.
LiabilityWhat you owe — credit cards, loans, mortgages.
IncomeMoney coming in — salary, dividends, interest.
ExpenseMoney going out — the categories you spend in.
EquityOpening balances and retained earnings.

Keeping the sidebar tidy

  • Favourites pin the accounts you use most to the top of the sidebar.
  • Placeholder accounts group children but take no transactions of their own.
  • Hidden accounts stay out of the sidebar until you switch them back on.
  • The filter box at the top of the sidebar narrows the tree as you type.
