About FinvestLens

Why it exists

GnuCash is a mature, trusted, free-software accounting package built on rigorous double-entry bookkeeping. Its desktop interface, though, is GTK: it does not look or behave like a Mac app, there is no iPad or iPhone version, and none of the Apple platform conveniences are there.

FinvestLens exists to give people in the Apple ecosystem a first-class native accounting app that keeps the correctness of GnuCash’s engine, feels genuinely at home on the platform, runs on macOS, iPadOS and iOS from one codebase, and stays interoperable so nobody is locked in.

It is not a fork of GnuCash. It is a clean, idiomatic Swift reimplementation of GnuCash’s concepts and data model, designed for Apple platforms from the ground up. Correctness is checked by importing a real 46,000-transaction GnuCash book and comparing every balance, report and register against GnuCash itself.

Licence

FinvestLens is free software, distributed under theGNU General Public License v3.0 — the same copyleft family GnuCash uses. That keeps FinvestLens licence-compatible with GnuCash, so its concepts and, where useful, its source can be drawn on directly.

The GnuCash XML format is treated here as an interchange specification. FinvestLens is not an official GnuCash product, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the GnuCash project. Our thanks to them all the same — the model this app rests on is theirs.
